Railway tracks extending through rural farmland toward distant hills

I woke up so early.

I’ll probably go back to sleep; I don’t know, but ugh, it’s definitely fall back time.

I’m also off on Monday and Tuesday. I forgot about being off on those days. It is Halloween, though. Time for scary stories.

What kind of scary? Gory scary? Ghost scary? People acting weird, scary?

We will see.

I think it will involve the main character walking down the railroad tracks. Where I grew up, there were railroad tracks down the street from our house. I used to walk down them for hours.

Once, in the distance, I saw some railroad cars stopped on the tracks, and I kept walking until I was close to them. These men climbed out of them when I walked up, and they made the shhh sign to me, then walked off the tracks and into this field. I watched them until they came to the street and kept walking. They never looked back.

I turned around and went home.

Years later, I told my dad. Dad freaked out; he wanted to know where the cars were, what time of day it was, and descriptions of the men. He was all about calling the police and reporting them.

I told Dad it happened when I was eight. I was 16 when I told him, so probably they weren’t there anymore. I was too cool to walk anywhere when I was a teenager, but probably those men and the cars weren’t still there.

Railroad tracks are spooky, even in the middle of the day. That’s probably why I enjoyed walking on the railroad tracks. I liked that they were dangerous and a little spooky.

Once, the boys and I went to walk in the park by our house. There was a man there who asked me for directions to Fort Worth. Not anywhere specifically, just Fort Worth. I gave him directions by the freeways, and he said, ‘Great, but I am going to walk there.’

I told him how to get to the Trinity Railway Station (TRE) so he could maybe take the train instead. He was adamant about walking, though, so I told him to just follow the tracks, and eventually he’d be in Fort Worth. So off he went.

I don’t know what he did when he got to where he was going; he had to cross the Trinity River. Maybe he gave up? Maybe he swam? Maybe he braved the freeway or Railway bridge? I don’t know, but hopefully he made it there safely.

Ok, that is all for me today. Have a Super Saturday!
