Scattered U.S. coins on a wooden table
Today I have a question.

What is something an adult did when you were a child that you thought was weird, but didn’t question it because they were an adult?

I have two things.

About six months ago I was talking with someone, probably Dan, about mint tea. I had finally found one that I liked that didn’t taste metallic. I described mint tea like drinking hot water with a pile of change soaking in the bottom of the glass.

Then I remembered something.

When I was in grade school, I took tap, ballet, and gymnastics lessons at a gym in Burleson. A neighbor girl who was a year younger than me also took lessons at the same gym. Occasionally her mom would take us to and from the lessons.

On one particular day, the neighbor girl wasn’t feeling well and wanted to lie down in the back seat. Usually we both rode in the back, but since she was lying down back there, I rode in the passenger seat next to her mom.

Her mom had been chewing on something or moving something around in her mouth that I thought was gum. About halfway home, she leaned over and spit it into the ashtray in the console that used to be in cars back in the day. It made a metal clink sound, so I looked to see what it was, and it was a dime. The mom then said, “It feels good to spit that out. I’ve had it in my mouth all day. I forgot it was there.”

It was odd, and I thought it was odd at the time, but she was the grown-up, so she must have had a reason. I relayed this memory to Dan, and I asked him if he could think of a reason why someone would have a dime in their mouth all day, and he didn’t know. I couldn’t think of anything either. We both thought it was strange.

That grown-up made a conscious choice. She saw the dime, she put the dime in her mouth and she left the dime in her mouth the entire day. I still have no answers. I still think it is strange.

The next memory came to me as I was making eggs for breakfast this morning.

I spent the night at a friend’s house one time, and the only time, because the whole family was odd in private.

Anyway, I had woken up before anyone else but the girl’s mom. The mom was in the kitchen making breakfast. She was making orange juice from one of those frozen concentrates that come in a cardboard tube. As she was stirring the juice, she cracked open about six eggs and added them to the juice.

She then poured a glass, handed it to me, smiled, and went back to cooking. No explanation whatsoever as to why she had just added raw eggs to the orange juice.

I didn’t drink the juice.

I asked Dan why someone would add raw eggs to orange juice. He said the only reason he could think of would be for the vitamins and nutrients. So I asked why not just cook eggs? He said maybe they didn’t like eggs. He wasn’t sure, but we both decided it was strange.

Here’s the thing, though: eggs make things thicker. That would be very thick juice, and there would be a taste, wouldn’t there? I didn’t know because I didn’t drink it, so any explanation would be great.

Share a story, or don’t, but that is all from me for today.

Have a good Sunday.
