Not only was he married to Carla, but I KNEW HIM!
A year after I divorced my first husband, I started trying out the multitude of dating apps available to single people.
There was a super persistent guy. After he sent me a message the first time I read his bio, he wanted a serious relationship from the start, he was way younger than me, and he wanted children.
I did not want children, and at the time, nothing serious. I sent him a message back stating all these things.
He was undeterred.
So I finally relented and agreed to meet up for dinner.
What followed was one of the worst interactions I have ever had with another human being in my entire life.
First, when he called, and we made plans, that was all we talked about, the time and place of our date.
Which is fine, I didn’t really expect a long conversation, but maybe some conversation. I figured that would come when we had our date.
He had tried to insist on picking me up and seemed perturbed when I said no, I’ll meet you there, finally ending the call by saying, ‘whatever,’ and ‘that’s fine.’
He was there when I arrived, and I have to say I was relieved. However, when I sat down, he said, “Do you make a habit of showing up late?”
The date was at 7, and I sat down at the table at 7:01.
Then, we had nothing to talk about. When I tried to start something, he would mumble a response or say he didn’t know or just smile, then look back down at his hands.
The waitress coming over was the best conversation I had with another person the entire evening.
So when the food came, a minuscule conversation had started, and I mentioned my sons, he dropped his fork, looked at me, banged the table, and said, “You should have told me you had children.”
I dug my phone out of my purse to the messages I had sent him, where I had told him about my children. There was no question, I had children, I had even told him their first names and how old they were.
“Well,” he said, sitting back and straightening up, “You should have told me again, I forgot.”
That was it for me, I put cash on the table for my half of the bill, and I left.
I thought that would be the end, but it wasn’t the end.
