I didn’t at first comprehend what I was seeing.
How can a heart, no longer inside a body, still be beating?
It didn’t make sense. Then again, nothing since this all started had made any sense.
Slowly I walked toward the heart beating on the ground. So slowly that I started to think the day was going to end before I got to the spot two feet away from where I stood.
The heart thump-thumped, thump-thumped, thump-thumped. I realized i was taking a step with each beat then stopping. Step, step, stop. Step, Step, stop.
When I finally got to the heart, it stopped beating.
“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO US?” I shouted.
I heard a car door slam, someone calling their dog, distant voices and laughter. All normal neighborhood sounds. The heart just a slimy blob laying in the dirt.
It was time to face this guy.
I needed to stare him down. Get him to stop. Tell him he can’t do this to us anymore. I just had to wait for him to show up again.
So, I will wait.
