Journal Entry Tuesday March 17, 2026

I was thinking about something this morning.

I went to Books a Million a few weeks ago and looked around. As I was leaving I passed by a table of banned books. I bought three. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Here is what had me thinking.

I read Slaughterhouse Five and couldn’t figure out why it was banned so I googled it, because of harsh language and sexually explicit content.

Also because her wrote about the harsh conditions of war.

In the book the main character Billy Pilgrim tells the story of being a prisoner of war in World War II in Germany. It isn’t pleasant but I don’t know why you would write about that in a pleasant way. I guess I’m saying to tell the story about being a prisoner of war you should know that it won’t be nice.

Also he goes back and forth through time because he was kidnapped by aliens. When he is on the spaceship he is naked and in a zoo while the aliens watch him, eventually a woman joins him and they make a baby.

Now, let’s visit my high school library.

When I was in high school the V.C. Andrews books were a big deal. Does anyone remember those?

If you don’t here is a little synopsis, a brother and sister fall in love, get married, and have children. The brother dies and the sister has to go live with her mother.

The mother is so ashamed that she puts the children in the attic which is where they grow up.

Those books were in my high school library.

So two people that are not related having sex in front of aliens, not ok, incest, and child abuse, totally fine.

It’s weird right?

Ok well I have to go because now I’m late for work.

Everyone enjoy your Tuesday.
