What is your favorite drink?

It’s funny because just yesterday we were watching The Food that Built America and they were talking about Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

I told Dan this story.

When I was a kid, we called everything coke. My parents bought Dr Pepper and when we asked for a coke they knew Dr Pepper is what we wanted and they gave us a Dr Pepper.

Well one day I went to McDonald’s with my dad and he had me order for myself. I ordered a Happy Meal with a coke. When we got the food I had my Happy Meal and a Coca-Cola. I was so confused. I told my dad, ‘they gave me a coke.’ My dad said ‘you ordered a coke.’

Still just utterly confused by the whole thing I said, ‘but I wanted a Dr Pepper.’

So then my dad had to tell me that when you order a soda in a restaurant you have to ask for that specific kind of soda. The restaurant workers don’t know that when you say you want a coke what you really want is a Dr Pepper. They think you want Coca-Cola.

It was a really big learning experience for me that day and I was a little sad because I kind of thought grown up were magic and could read minds.

That’s a lot for a simple question.
