A couple of years after I divorced my first husband there were videos on Facebook of people making jewelry and selling it, and they were making some pretty good money. Since I was a single mom of three at the time, I thought ‘this would be a good second income for me. I can do it at home and it looks fairly easy.’
It was not easy, and it was quite expensive, the supplies needed to make the jewelry cost about $200 to $300 to start, and then the remaining things after that if you want to make good jewelry was around $400, also, there are so many Etsy pages out there for jewelry that you would have to find some niche market that people loved, or spend even more money to advertise.
I didn’t have that kind of money so my jewelry making hobby died.
Shortly after that I found knitting which I still do today but stopped trying to sell long ago and here’s why, everyone wants me to make them a blanket. I don’t like to make blankets I actually hate making blankets. For some reason though, that is all people ask for and they don’t want just a lap blanket, they want something to cover their king size bed, I will tell you right now with the time and material it takes to make a blanket that size, you would need to charge around $300 to make a small profit.
I have picked up other hobbies over the years since I learned to knit, but I still knit pretty frequently, I just have less interest in it now. I am actually making a sweater right now that is turning out very nice. So knitting will stay, but I won’t try to sell anymore.
Before Christmas I started another Etsy page, I made shirts out of some of my artwork, but I wasn’t selling anything and I think Etsy may have closed my shop. If you would like to check it out you can it’s ednamakesstuff.etsy.com.
That’s all have a wonderful Sunday 🙂
